Working conditions in these factories were often under strict rules and
regulations by a leader or boss. There were long hours of work that was
mainly taken up by a set of machines. By the year of 1900, most industrial workers in
the United States were still working a 10-hour day, but still had a salary that
was 20 to 40 percent less than minimum wage, and wasn't able to support a decent
life. However, harsh working conditions was still here long before the Industrial Revolution happened. Pre-industrial society was very hash and often had cruel child labor rules, nasty living conditions, and long working hours.

On average, the basic worker worked 10-14 hours a day, six days a week. Out of those 10 hours, workers only had one 1 hour break. The wages these workers received were not even minimum wage. A skilled worker received $3 a day, but an unskilled worker received $1.25 a day. Even though these rules were unfair, women and children had it worse. Women and children only received 1/3 of those salaries; this really shows the true side of America at this time. Even though the salaries were unfair, the conditions weren't better.
Majority of the time, factories were kept dark and scary; with the sun being the only light source in the whole factory. Machines in the factories were very dangerous, and had parts exposed that could harm and possibly kill workers. If you didn't die from the machines, then you could die from poor sanitation. Garbage pick-up wasn't frequently and their were no sanction codes that workers had to follow. This lead to diseases and and deaths.

Living Conditions

Even though workers dealt with harsh working conditions, their own homes weren't better. Narrow walkways between unordinary shaped parking lots and buildings were locate near these homes or "slums". Sanitary facilities were not around. It was also common for groups of unrelated mill workers to share rooms and houses in low quality housing where 8-10 people may live. These often had no furniture or decorations. Occupants would have to sleep on a pile of straw or sawdust. These homes would share toilet facilities that would have open sewers, and would be at risk of developing disease and bacteria like pathologies. Disease was spread through a contaminated water supply also.
Not everybody lived in homes like these. The Industrial Revolution created a larger middle class of professionals such as lawyers and doctors. Conditions soon did improve during the 19th century as public health acts were passed and enforced, They covered things like sewage, hygiene, etc.. Health conditions improved in the 19th century because of better sanitation and the famines that troubled rural areas did not happen in industrial areas anymore.

The living conditions during the Industrial Revolution were disgusting and terrible. The cities were not sustainable for high populations. This caused many families, who didn't even know each other, to live together. These homes would be very crammed and cluttered because the house would be cheap and only have 2-4 rooms. The rooms didn't even have running water for sinks and toilets.
The areas the house were located by were near factories that polluted the air. These caused disease, like cholera and typhus, and depression because the smoke blocked the sunlight into towns. The smoke would also cover the streets. 31,00 people died. These affects effected society in a very negative way.
